Hiya from Scotland!
Anyone seen Braveheart? I just returned from a weekend in Stirling, where we climbed to the top of the William Wallace Monument (that Game Of Thrones-looking building in the photo below). Did you know his sword was 5’4 long?!?
Anyway, Scotland’s wonderful; it’s everything it’s cracked up to be and even more charming. Plus, I got to see the Northern Lights!
Starting When?!
I want to chat about starting rates. I’ve been working on lots of different hotel stories that require me to list the starting rate.
So, what does it mean when a journalist asks you for the starting rate of a hotel or resort? We’re asking for the lowest rate during the lowest season of the year. I’ve seen a lot of confusion with PR around this lately but we’re basically asking for the cheapest rate of the year.
And be sure to keep the most up-to-date figures handy for each client, so it’s one less thing you need to get back to journalists about. I’ve often had to wait multiple days for info a starting rate!
Tomorrow’s AMA
Join me for the Ask Me Anything session tomorrow at 12 noon EST!
I know a lot of journalists host AMAs, and yes, they are all worth your time, but tomorrow, we’re talking about dream pubs and how to break in! Don’t have one? Don’t worry, we’ll also be chatting about plenty of other things with a small group of professionals.
These private video sessions are only available for paid subscribers, so upgrade by clicking below to join tomorrow, and I’ll email the video link ahead of time.
It’s worth the monthly cost alone (not to mention all the other paid content), and if you don’t believe me…
“I just wanted to say a massive thank you for leading the chat today. That was one of the most insightful conversations I’ve had in a while and am really grateful.” - paid subscriber
“Just writing to say how much I enjoyed the AMA yesterday. It was so nice just to connect with other people in the business and get to know you better! I am definitely looking forward to the next one!” - paid subscriber

Hi Katie, just weighing in from a PR person here. Starting rates always fluctuate at a hotel based on seasonal dynamic pricing so while we would hope it is a flat "from" rate, that's not always the case which is why we need to check in with our clients to see what it is. What is the "from" rate today might not be the same in a few weeks. I know media don't want to hear this, but it's the reality.
