It's Time To Talk About The Elephant In The Room.
Calls for pitches, recent articles and did you see the most recent episode of White Lotus?!
Well, it’s that time of year again when you feel like every editor hates you. But seriously, December and January are the toughest months for freelance writers.
Budgets have dried up, editors are understandably checked out and everyone is busy preparing for and regrouping from the holiday season.
There’s also an elephant in the room…recession.
Whether we’re currently in one or we’re heading for one like a fiery meteorite headed toward Earth, PR friends, it’s time to prepare your clients for 2023.
Writing budgets are likely to get slashed (some already have), making it harder to land assignments immediately. So coach your clients on playing the long game. Let them know confirmed assignments and immediate coverage for press trips are not a good strategy for next year (they’re never a good strategy, to be honest). But journalists and PR alike may need to bide their time. Patience pays off. Trust the journalists you work with, and everyone will benefit from a shared professional respect.
