Hi subscribers,
I’m here in the windy and wild Faroe Islands, surrounded by sheep and the world’s best hot dogs. It’s my fourth trip here, and its constant beauty (see below) reminds me why it’s one of my favorite places on the planet.
It’s been a brutal and exhausting few weeks for us all, so I’ll keep this newsletter short.
This Sucks, But It Happens…
Over a year ago, I went on a press trip with an assignment. A month later, I submitted my article. It still hasn’t been published. And to be honest, I’m not sure it ever will be.
I’ve followed up with the editor multiple times, asking if they had a publish date or if there was anything I could do to help get it live. The answer was always that they were “prioritizing meeting monthly traffic goals.”
This is crazy frustrating. All the time, effort, and work (including a round of edits) that went into this article are seemingly for nothing. And I was paid for it, so I can’t shop it elsewhere.
Luckily, the PR I worked with was understanding, partially because I was very transparent about what was happening and gave them updates every time my editor responded.
But it’s a reminder of how there are no guarantees in freelancing and that coverage is never confirmed. Freelancers have absolutely ZERO idea when an article will be published (please stop asking). There is also a chance the article may never be published, no matter how good it is.
